The Art of Constructive Apologies

The Art of Constructive Apologies

A sincere, well-delivered apology is one of the most effective tools for repairing trust and moving forward.

Owning Your Part

There is no such thing as a 100/0 split in marriage conflict. Even if you believe you are only 10 percent at fault, own that 10 percent completely. Deflecting with 'but you also...' negates the apology entirely.

The Anatomy of an Apology

An effective apology includes three parts: acknowledgement, impact recognition, and corrective action. For example: 'I am sorry I forgot our plans (acknowledgement). I know this made you feel unimportant (impact). Next time, I will make sure to sync our calendars immediately (action).'

Removing the 'If' and 'But'

These two words are the death of an apology. 'I am sorry if you were offended' shifts the blame to her sensitivity. Remove those words and take full accountability for your actions. A man who can admit his faults is a man who exudes quiet confidence.
